At M.A. Frazier, we are proud to be participating in the Oyster Shell Recycling efforts that have been gaining momentum throughout the state. Here are some facts about oysters:
- A single oyster shell can filter 30 gallons of water per day
- An oyster reef can shelter up to 100 other species such as shrimp and lobster
- Oyster shells contain calcium carbonate which is a known buffer that helps to offset ocean acidification
- Oysters contain a whole raft of Vitamins, including C, D, B1, B2 and B3. In terms of valuable minerals, if you eat just four medium-size oysters every day, you’ll get the recommended daily allowances of calcium, copper, iodine, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus and zinc.
- Oyster reefs stabilize ocean shorelines, making them less susceptible to damage by hurricanes and strong storms.

Great strides have already been made in Wellfleet Harbor and other locations around Massachusetts, but there is more work to be done. We all have an opportunity to help keep our beautiful oceans cleaner and more bountiful and protect our shores from erosion.
Restaurants are the largest users of oysters so there are special efforts being made to get as many Cape Cod restaurants as possible to participate in the shell recycling program. The next time you are enjoying one of the many raw bars around town, ask them if they recycle their shells.
